Description
The Matra R550 Magic 1 was mass-produced from 1967 as the French short range Air-to-Air Missile of choice. The Magic 1 found many customers globally supporting French aircraft sales to many nations.
The Magic 1 was used in combat by the South African Air Force during the South African Border-War against Angolan MiG-21’s and MiG-23’s. The limited performance envelope of early generation R.550s led South Africa to begin developing an indigenous AAM called the V-3 Kukri.
